MUSCA’S UNIQUE HOUSEFLY BRED FOR HALF-A-CENTURY
Almost fifty years ago during the Space Race, the former Soviet Union was intensely preparing for a manned space expedition.
A round trip to Mars was estimated to take four long years, making human waste management and food acquisition a critical issue to resolve.
An ecology for self-supplied food and fertilizer was developed, utilizing the most mundane of terrestrial creatures: the housefly.
The research was suspended after the Soviet Union collapsed; however, the technology and research was inherited and is conducted by the MUSCA team today.
MUSCA owns thoroughbred houseflies that have been selectively bred over 1200 generations, for almost fifty years.
MUSCA’s thoroughbred houseflies are resilient to extremely high-density spaces, and have high productivity.
